Company History
Mountain States Mutual Casualty Company began operations in August of 1937 and was founded by Clinton P. Anderson, J. R. Modrall, and Thomas McCaffrey. Mr. Anderson owned an insurance agency and had great difficulty placing workers’ compensation coverage - especially for the State Highway Department which was legislated to come under the Act.
Anderson had a long, varied and distinguished public career which included being the New Mexico State Treasurer, a member of the U. S. House of Representatives (1940-1945), U. S. Secretary of the Agriculture under President Truman (1945-1948), and a U. S. Senator (1948-1972). During his years in the Senate he was an author of Medicare, Chairman and member of the Senate Interior and Insular Affairs Committee, Joint Committee on Atomic Energy, and a ranking member of the Senate Committee on Finance.
In 1957 the company purchased the old National Guard Armory building at 501 Silver Avenue SW, which was built in 1908. Although it was erected as a military facility, it mainly served as a convention center for events such as political conventions, wrestling matches, boxing matches and nationally famous musical groups. (History says Elvis Presley once performed in the building) At one time J. C. Penney occupied the building while its premises were being renovated because of fire. The company remodeled the armory and turned it into an office building. Mountain States occupied the entire building from 1982 through 1999. After construction of its new home office building in the Journal Center Corridor, the building was sold to Public Service Company of New Mexico. PNM demolished the building and erected a multi-story parking lot on that piece of property.
Today, Mountain States Insurance Group consists of Mountain States Mutual Casualty Company, the parent organization, and Mountain States Indemnity Company, its wholly owned subsidiary. Both companies are licensed and operating in New Mexico, Colorado, Texas and Utah, providing automobile, workers’ compensation, general liability and commercial property insurance. All products are marketed through independent agencies located in the various states of operation.
